One Day Juice Reset

Juice cleanse.JPG

When I go on a vacation I tend to binge on all the new and different foods.. our most recent trip to the Bahamas was filled with lots of crab cakes, sushi, conch dishes, desserts and piña coladas. And when I say lots, I mean it. We are suckers for multiple orders of room service throughout the day. But hey calories don’t count on vacation right?!

Although all the food was delicious, all of the overeating and different foods always leaves me feeling bloated and exhausted on the flight home. In the past, I used to stress out the weight I gained or losing all the progress I made before vacation. However, having a plan to get right back on track has helped me eliminate that guilt. Doing a juice cleanses has become one of my favorite ways to bounce back from the unhealthy eating binges I typically indulge in while on vacation.

Below I will share an easy one-day juice reset you can juice at home. The idea behind this juice reset is to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible.

Obviously, to do this DIY juice cleanse you’ll need a juicer. I recommend a juicer that uses low-speed mastication. Low-speed processing protects and maintains healthy enzymes, prevents oxidation and allows juice to be stored up to 72 hours without degradation. I personally have a Kuvings Slow Juicer. I love the wide mouth feeding chute because it cuts down majorly on prep time. Omega Juicers also offer great juicers.

Alright so lets get started.

Step-by-step guide for preparing for your cleanse :

  • Go grocery shopping (list below). If you are located in the Dubuque, IA area, I recommend Hy-Vee or Natural Grocers. They will have the biggest selection of organic produce. I like to do my shopping trip the day before I’m going to juice, so I am not walking around the grocery store on the day I can’t eat. We tried Hy-Vee Aisles Online for the first time to get our groceries for the reset, and talk about a time saver! Also, if you don’t own mason jars or other airtight liquid containers, invest in some (you can find them cheap at stores Target or Wal-Mart). Or on Amazon of course!

  • The morning of your reset, make your green juice. Depending on the size of your juicer’s pulp catcher and liquid container, you should be able to make a day’s worth of green juice in three batches. Therefore, you’d want to divide up the ingredients evenly into three piles to juice separately. However, instead of using my juicers liquid container, I used a big pot so I was able to juice my green juice in one big batch. When you are finished making the green juice, pour your juice into your mason jars.

  • Rinse the main parts of your juicer. Then, make your dessert juice and seal it in a mason jar.

  • Clean your juicer. and store your juice jars in the refrigerator until your ready to drink it.

Grocery List

The following will make you roughly six 12-oz cups of green juice and one 12-oz cup of sweet potato dessert juice. I recommend purchasing all organic produce if possible.

Green Juice

  • 2 bunches kale

  • 2 bunches chard

  • 2 bunches spinach

  • 3 lemons

  • 2 apples

  • 3 cucumbers

  • 1 big bunch celery

  • 1 bunch parsley

  • 3” turmeric root (you could sub this for ginger)

Dessert Juice

  • 1 large sweet potato

  • 1 apple

  • 4 carrots

  • dash of cinnamon

Game Plan for Reset Day

Based on my calculations you should have approximately  1,200 calories in this day’s worth of juice. Depending on your height and activity level, this might satisfy your usual caloric intake or it could be on the low side, so plan accordingly. For me, sinceI love to exercise and be active this is low. For this reason, I choose to do my juice reset on a recovery day, and since it was right after vacation, we spent most of the in bed watching Shameless on Netflix. However, I have done cleanses in the past and felt totally energized and exercised as I normally would. Bottom line—listen to your body and don’t push it. This isn’t a punishment for your body!

Now lets get down to it. I always recommend starting your day with a large glass of water. I typically start with 16oz right when I get out of bed. If you have your first 12oz glass of juice at 8AM, and drink 12oz of juice every 2 hours, you will have your dessert drink at 8PM. I find this to be spaced out perfect for me, but feel free to adjust to your needs. If you find that you are starving throughout the day and the juice isn’t enough, first ask yourself if you’re really hungry or you’re just bored and your mind is playing tricks on you? If you’re really hungry, have a piece of fruit, a vegetable, or other plant-based snack. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day!! This will also keep you feeling full and help fight your cravings.
